Hide the children!

This is some very gruesome couture by British menswear designer Katie Eary for her Spring 2010 collection. If someone wore this on October 31, I’d think they are the bomb! But if they wore this on November 1, I’d think they’re a lunatic. Why are my eyes drawn to the fur? Fur on a man is like heels on a baby- not right!  You have to appreciate that it’s anatomically correct (I assume). Sort of like this be@rbrick. If Chewbacca were a pimp , this Gold Ghetto Chewbacca would be beyond perfect. Check out Katie’s website- I actually love the union jack trousers and the British guard look. Hawt!

Tomorrow is my most favorite holiday ever! Why? Because it’s the only day in the year where no one points, stares or laughs at me! Sooooo………Happy Halloween!

Eccentric Hats for Daring!

If you want a hat that really makes a statement, call on these two magnificent milliners, Stephen Jones and  Piers Atkinson. Each has their own unique sense of style- Jones with an elegant, vintage flair with a touch of quirk and  Atkinson with an outlandish, offbeat style that can be eccentric. Both are breathtaking, in my opinion, and deserve much success for their visionary take on covering a precarious, small space- the head. Having said that,  does this give me a license to put a nude Barbie on my head for the next soiree I attend? I think it does! Yessssss!

Warrior Couture by Eva Nyìri

Posted by roxybina on Sep 24, 2009 in Viktor & Rolf, awesome, bad ass, cool

1764-2

Eva Nyíri, graduate of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Hungary, designed these masterpieces evoking inspirations from Genghis Khan, Victor and Rolf , Gareth Pugh, and the Transformers. Imagine the conversation at that dinner table. Lots of grunts and stares. Anyway, I really like this collection because it is interchangeable and the silhouettes are to die for. Whoever wearing this on the street would have everyone crossing the street to the other side to avoid them because it looks so ominous! I especially love the neck brace. I mean, who needs to have peripheral vision? Who? Thought so

11 Fascinating Facts about Coco Chanel

Posted by roxybina on Sep 18, 2009 in awesome, chanel, cool, handbags, karl lagerfeld, vintage

coco-before-chanel-tautou coco_before_chanel083 o563

In honor of the Audrey Tatou film, Coco Before Chanel (Coco avant Chanel), here are some interesting facts about my all-time favorite designer, Coco Chanel. I am so kookoo for Coco, that I used to draw the CC symbol on my ankle in the mid 90s! I wanted to get that tattooed eventually, but my fear of needles took over. So, the sharpie it was. Coco Before Chanel (Coco avant Chanel) opens in select US theaters on September 25, 2009.  Count me in on opening day!

1. She made the tan popular after retuning from a cruise to Cannes with a sunburn.

2. She was a Leo and collected anything with lions.

3. The shape of the  Chanel No.5 bottle  was in reference to Place Vendome.

4. She would have Chanel No. 5 sprayed throughout her home.

5. When Coco passed away, only 3 outfits were found in her Rue Cambon apartment.

6. In 1938, she started dating a Nazi officer named Hans Gunther Von Dincklage.

7. Until her death in 1971, her fashion empire brought in more than $160 million per year.

8. Before her designing career began, she worked in a small hosiery shop in France.

9.The Duke of Westminster painted CC and part of his crest in gold on all the lamposts in W1, London.

10. Coco’s real first name Gabriel. She got Coco from a song she performed in a musical called ‘Qui qu’a vu Coco’.

11. She loved pockets, most all her collections included pockets of some sort.

Here are my prized Chanel stockings :

Marc Jacobs- Spring 2010- Edgy and Elegant

Marc Jacob’s Spring 2010 collection was one of his most feminine to date. With touches of satin lingerie, sheer ruffles, and ethereal fabrics, Jacob’s was most likely inspired by the French’s love for the lady -like, yet avant -guarde.  I see hints of  vintage Jean Paul Gaultier and even Christian Dior’s last couture collection. Hopefully, the studs, black and the garish ’80s are buried where they belong now that Jacobs has ushered in a fresh, new, sophisticated  Spring collection.

Cheese grater or Fabulous Dress?

Posted by roxybina on Sep 8, 2009 in awesome, cool

1715-2

1715-3

Kidding!  Designer Michelle Czech (she recently won the Metamorphosis Student Showcase in Melbourne, Australia) is another one to watch. Laser cut, geometric cut outs leave an impressively clean and modern touch to what would be another ho-hum dress. The lack of material is what makes these designs so unique. Versatile, one can slip this over anything and look fashion forward. I especially love the dress in the first photo. I would totally wear that if I was pregnant. I would also use it to store my scarfs when I’m not  wearing it. Kidding , again. I’ll stop.

Anne-Sophie Madsen’s Textured Couture

Danish Design School recent graduate, Anne-Sofie Madsen,  is surely one to keep on your radar. Her soft textured, creamy designs are perfect for that dreary fall/winter day or night needing a splash of fantasy. My favorites are the shoulders on the dress in the  second photo- very  reminiscent of  Balmain. The coat in the third photo is fantastic as it reminds me of a coat my mother gave me from her collection. I remember my mother wearing it as I was a child and now, years later, I wear it with the same grace . I will stop the sap right there!   Yes, I look like a sheep dog wearing it, but I am a graceful sheep dog.

Lurch is in this season

Big shoulders, like GINORMOUS shoulders are what Ada Zanditon is into this season. She has interned for Alexander McQueen and Gareth Pugh, which just saved her two jokes at her expense. No, I’m kidding! She’s actually quite talented either way because not only are her designs fashion forward and edgy, but they are also made from organic fabrics and made in an environmentally sustainable way.  I would totally wear the top in the first photo for when I have a zit on my chin. I kinda wish it was in a faux bois fabric so it looks like a tree stump and I’m the chipmunk living inside. That would be cool. The shirt in the second photo is perfect for ladies with a HH bra size. That’s thoughtful since it’s so hard to find a nice shirt to house those bad boys. One thing though, you definitely can’t wear a shoulder bag, better go with a clutch.

Christian Dior Fall 2009 Couture- Fabulous!

Posted by roxybina on Jul 14, 2009 in awesome, christian dior, cool, john galliano

1582-2

1582-3

Dior’s Fall 2009 Couture Collection echoed a better era for fashion (in my opinion)- The 1950s. In the 50s, clothes were more feminine and had a an innocent edge to it and impeccable quality that today’s mass produced clothes cannot compete with. Also the silhouette, was perfect for any body type. Luckily, with the few fashion houses that still create the dying art of couture, the spirit of the early decades can still be created with same grace as previous decades, only with a much higher price tag. In this collection, the undergarment was the repeated theme throughout. The hidden foundation is what makes the outfit sit well, but with true John Galliano misfit style, the foundation became the center of attention. How fitting.
