Chanel-Haute Couture Spring 2010- Heart Hair!

Karl the Kaiser did it again! Friggin’ fantastic collection! The heart hair is what life is all about for me now. I’m still figuring out how to do that to my hair. I totally need to streak my hair with hair mascara! Lagerfeld introduced a pastel range of colors similar to Laduree’s famous (and scrumptious) macaroons. Not a tinge of gold could be found; only silver slivers and specks creating a fresh, modern look to a half century- old classic suit. If I had ten thumbs, they would all be pointing up for Karl Lagerfeld! The groom’s suit is worthy of a nice baked potato at Ponderosa, however.

How about a Chanel logo on your ______?

I love Chanel and everything, but putting the logo on everything, especially random stuff that no one cares about is pretty ridiculous. (And this is coming from someone who used to draw CC on EVERYTHING!)

Exhibit A: The Chanel Fishing Pole- Anybody who goes fishing will not know what Chanel is. They will most likely pronounce it as ‘channel’. So, who cares?

Exhibit B: The Chanel Boomerang and The Chanel Segway- People who use boomerangs are normally beach bums and beach bums think Chanel is a chick with fake nails and a big butt……Anybody who can afford Chanel has a chauffeur and would not be seen dragging their own ass around town in a Segway. Anyway, only people like this ride Segways.

Exhibit C: The Chanel surfboard- see exhibit B (The Boomerang).  The Chanel Guitar Case- That’s actually pretty cool, except most people who play guitar would rather spend that money on crack or weed.

The Chanel tattoo: Okay, confession…. When I was in high school, I used to draw that sh*t on my ankle with a Sharpie, like everyday. Rain or shine! So, I’m kinda excited for that, except that I now realize a tramp stamp is a tramp stamp no matter how you cut it. Let’s just say the jury’s out on that on for me.

The Chanel Samurai suit: Hawt!

I would totally ride that bike if I only knew how. Don’t judge! :(

This one is BEYOND ridiculous- they stole that idea from when you fall asleep in class and have spiral notebook imprints on your face.

Designer Brian Lichtenberg has decided to take the one cute thing in the world and make it beyond hideous. This dreadful piece can be yours for $2,100. Or save yourself $2,990 and buy a Gizmo stuffed doll and hot glue gun it to a mini-skirt. Seriously, the idea isn’t that bad, it’s the execution that is at fault. Check out the side view of this monstrosity. Tucks- need not apply and even if you have nothing to tuck, it looks like you’re hiding something. And by something I mean a gut-over -bagina or an unfortunate case of crotch-rot (DO NOT CLICK HERE IF YOU DON”T WANT TO VOMIT UNCONTROLLABLY)*. I need to look at some Chanel to cleanse my palette.

* Shut down and unplug your computer to avoid a short from the vomit you just spewed.

Trompe l’oeil Mania!!

I was so inspired by this post I wrote not too long ago that I had to make it myself. Also, I wasn’t going to pay $300 for a shirt ( that’s so 90’s). So, I whipped out my Simply Spray fabric paint and went to town on a couple of Old Navy cotton shirts I bought for like $3 each. And so if I effed up, I wouldn’t feel too bad because the shirts are a price of a cup of tea. And so I was ready to go NUTS! I sprayed the paint onto a paper plate and brush the paint on to the shirt as if I was an artiste. My cats were sniffing around the paint area intrigued by my spontaneous paint-a-thon. Then they ran around crazy for an hour. Hmmmm. Anyway, they dried pretty fast when I set them out in the sun (about 30 minutes). My fave out of the bunch is the white cardigan with the Chanel-style camellia and pearls. Alas, now I can look like a cartoon and I can still go to the spa!

If Chanel designed a Phone…..

Posted by roxybina on Dec 29, 2009 in chanel, cool, karl lagerfeld

small_attachment small_attachment-2

Fred de GARILHE designed this Chanel phone prototype that make my legs weak. Unfortunately, it’s only make believe and not real. The face slides to the side and reveals a screen. The phone when closed resembles a chocolate square  (or a laxative!). Anyway, I would take this over my iPhone only if it has the same features as the iPhone PLUS a built-in red laser so I can entertain my cats, (so essential). That’s the only way , man.  Who am I kidding! I would take this even if it was only a calculator- it looks so cool!!! Check out the Chanel concept car from earlier this year. With these two, we can take over the world! Muwahahahahahaah.

Chanel- Ready to Wear- Spring 2010- It’s a Ho Down!

Ever wonder what a farm girl from the depths of the midwest would look in Chanel? You know, the girl who has unkempt hair, but a potentially supermodel face, but doesn’t know it because people around her are too busy picking up pig poo? Yeah. Well, Karl had the same epiphany (or Netflixed Green Acres)and made a whole damn collection about it! In all honesty, I kind of like it. I’d totally wear the suit dress in the fifth photo and go apple picking or do something girly and quaint like that.  That dude in the second photo is NOT gesturing, ‘These are my b*tches and Hos’ . No.  He’s just making sure the camera gets his perfectly tweezed eyebrows.  By the way, it looks like clogs are back!

Bag Lady/ Haute Homeless

I came across this phenomenal photo shoot as I was perusing the internet. See what you can make from a bag? A damn outfit! That is genius! I used to collect shopping bags when I was a teenager and I used to tape it to my bedroom walls. Others taped up New Kids on the Block posters and I would tape up Moschino shopping bags. Others would hang Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam ( don’t hate! you know every word to ‘Lost in Emotion’) posters in their lockers, I would hang a poster of Linda Evangelista in Chanel. Anyway, this gives me an idea to round up all the homeless and see who makes the best dress out of shopping bags! Project Homeless - I think I just gave Bravo an idea.

Traces of Being: Iran in the Passage of Memories- Fascinating!

Posted by roxybina on Sep 28, 2009 in Uncategorized, awesome, bad ass, cool

dsc03403 dsc03381 dsc03397

A fascinating exhibit in the Morono Kiang GalleryTraces of Being: Iran in the Passage of Memories showcases mixed media and installations by Pantea Karimi, Hushi Mortezaie, Amitis Motevalli, and Fereshteh Toosi. All these artists share one thing in common- their memories of the Persian culture, Iranian history and how it was and how it has been perceived through their young eyes and how it inspired their enthralling creations.

Through the eyes of artist/designer Hushi Mortezaie, fashion and his passion for the pop culture is translated in his pieces for this exhibit, aptly called ‘Chic Boutique’. Silhouette life-size cut outs of the women in traditional Persian dress decorated with high fashion labels, money, newspapers, and yes, a Metallica patch proved to be a interesting take on the traditional vs. modern. With faces of superstar singer, Googoosh and Michael Jackson among others, the Pop culture knows no cultural boundaries in Mortezaie’s works. Beautiful vintage pieces from his avant-garde Michael & Hushi collection were on display linking the gap between fashion, self expression, art and the traditional Persian attire popular in the many quaint often mountainous villages of Iran. One stunning piece features a leather bomber jacket with a painting of ancient Persian miniatures made popular in poetry books by Hafez. A belt made of bullets, a Chanel bag as a hat and to die for heels with a curled up toe that would make a genie jealous. Nationalistic slogans written in Farsi proved his love for Iran and the freedom it deserves. Beautiful, thought provoking, kitschy, and at times, political, Mortezaie knows how to balance it all in the name of fashion.

Other installations included an installation of marble slabs in pastels with Farsi written phrases in gold, intricate sketched drawings and a particularly colorful installation by Fereshteh Toosi involving yarn, neon plastic strings, and the formation of spheres and squares.

An interactive installation was created on one wall of the gallery. Historic images and happenings translate differently to different people. This installation explores those translations by the way of a timeline on the side of one wall of the gallery. You may post and read other people’s recollections at different points of history. Of course, the most filled point was 1979. However, this year is filling up fast.

Here is my memory:

As a Persian-American, I have not actually been to Iran. I speak Farsi, well enough to drop f-bombs when needed, (I’ve been told with a New England accent!) and celebrate Persian customs. My family came to America to attend university nine years before the revolution. At the time of the overthrow of the Shah, I was 2 going on 3. I remember watching the 1979 Islamic Revolution unfolding on the evening news unaware of the huge impact it would have on Iran’s future, my family, and how it would shape me as a person.

One vivid memory I had was when I would finish bathing, I would put a towel on my head and baby talk “Ma-sha-shaw’, throwing my fist in the air Arsenio Hall –style. I’ll be my own translator: ‘Margh bar Shah’= ‘Death to the Shah.’ Heavy words for a 3 year old, but I was merely a parrot mimicking the images on the nightly news. After all, The Muppet Show was coming up after the news so I was hyper and excited!

me waiting for The Muppet Show at saying 'Ma-sha-shaw'

As history repeats itself, I wonder if my son notices the green flags, the frenzy on Twitter, and the brave Iranian people chanting the chants for freedom. I bet he does, but he probably still wonders when Yo Gabba Gabba will come on. One day he’ll remember, too.

Chanel Guillotine and a Tiffany’s Glock!

How brilliant is this? It comes from the twisted  mind of  artist Tom Sachs!  That’s sort of cool to have a name that sounds like Saks, as in my mecca , Saks Fifth Avenue. Anyway, I love how the guillotine looks like a Soloflex. What are those stools on each side of the board? They’re handbag holders! Because no one wants to put their handbag on the floor, even when your head is going to fly off momentarily. How thoughtful! I need a glock like that. Speaking of glocks, my heat-packing mom left bullets in her makeup case accidentally before boarding a plane. You can imagine the hysteria it ensued with airport security. Apparently, she totally forgot she put them there. She probably keeps them there  in case someone bothers her while she’s primping. So long story short, airport security saw toys and candy for my son in her suitcase. They chuckled and then confiscated the bullets and let her pass. Heat-packing grandmas are the best!

11 Fascinating Facts about Coco Chanel

Posted by roxybina on Sep 18, 2009 in awesome, chanel, cool, handbags, karl lagerfeld, vintage

coco-before-chanel-tautou coco_before_chanel083 o563

In honor of the Audrey Tatou film, Coco Before Chanel (Coco avant Chanel), here are some interesting facts about my all-time favorite designer, Coco Chanel. I am so kookoo for Coco, that I used to draw the CC symbol on my ankle in the mid 90s! I wanted to get that tattooed eventually, but my fear of needles took over. So, the sharpie it was. Coco Before Chanel (Coco avant Chanel) opens in select US theaters on September 25, 2009.  Count me in on opening day!

1. She made the tan popular after retuning from a cruise to Cannes with a sunburn.

2. She was a Leo and collected anything with lions.

3. The shape of the  Chanel No.5 bottle  was in reference to Place Vendome.

4. She would have Chanel No. 5 sprayed throughout her home.

5. When Coco passed away, only 3 outfits were found in her Rue Cambon apartment.

6. In 1938, she started dating a Nazi officer named Hans Gunther Von Dincklage.

7. Until her death in 1971, her fashion empire brought in more than $160 million per year.

8. Before her designing career began, she worked in a small hosiery shop in France.

9.The Duke of Westminster painted CC and part of his crest in gold on all the lamposts in W1, London.

10. Coco’s real first name Gabriel. She got Coco from a song she performed in a musical called ‘Qui qu’a vu Coco’.

11. She loved pockets, most all her collections included pockets of some sort.

Here are my prized Chanel stockings :
