I’m on Apartment Therapy!
Friday, February 27th, 2009And guess what? I received negative comments from people who didn’t know the entire story but made their own assumptions anyway. Rebecca, a writer for Apartment Therapy in LA emailed me last week about getting a Room in a Book. She is very friendly and said she would feature it on Apartment Therapy. I of course felt some hesitation because I knew that there would be people who would leave negative comments because that is how Apartment Therapy is. I wrote a blog post about this awhile ago and you can see it HERE. Rebecca only needed a few changes so I agreed to do it for no fee because free advertising is good right? The commenters assumed that I charged $450 for the design but I would not have charged that much for just a few changes.
You can read about the process on Rebecca’s post and you can view the entire book I put together for her HERE.
Here were some of my suggestions from the book:
1. Drapery: I felt the space needed some color other than white on the walls and since you cannot paint or add wallpaper I would suggest adding drapery in a blue gray color similar to your existing pillows for a nice balance.
2. Shelving: I like the whole black and white scheme and I would carry it through to your shelving by painting them black to match the other furniture.
3. Pillows: I feel like the black and white pillows somewhat competes with the zebra stools and so I would keep the two gray pillows and add two white pillows to keep it clean.
4. Artwork: I think there needs to be a poster in a black and white print that would work nicely with your large existing poster. I think it will create that balance you are looking for.
5. Side Tables: I think having two side tables will make the sofa feel more in its place and also provide more storage and a place to set things down. The ones that I have chosen are 15” wide so they should fit nicely.

Oh Rachel,
I think you added refinement and chicness to the space. You showed us again how its the details that matter. Well done!

i really enjoy what you did w/the space. i read the negative comments on the AT site, and i’m not understanding why people choose to be negative (i’d just as soon not comment at all). be encouraged, your work is great and what a privilege to have the extra exposure!

Blair you are so sweet! I could say the same about you!

Go you! Congrats on the much-deserved recognition at AT!
But don’t you just HATE all the negative comments over there? I just don’t understand why people think it’s okay to rip into others just because they feel anonymous. I much prefer our smaller blog community because we do such a good job keeping it a supportive and loving place!
Have a great weekend girly :)

Funny, I saw that post on Apartment Therapy and though I rarely read comments I did on that one and was in shock about how many negative comments were there. I mean, she was quite clear in the post about how tight the parameters were that she gave you and i personally think you gave her quite a lot under such strict guidelines. I mean she could barely move a desk in that room. For what it’s worth, I immediately took your information from AT because I will soon be doing some re-design in my place and thought your services would be PERFECT. And I would have never known about it had it not been for AT so I guess some good will come of it.

I’m so intrigued by this post! I need to go read your Apartment Therapy post. I can’t believe they would leave you negative comments.

Rachel Congratulations! I love what you did in that room. It looks cleaner, less cluttered and very chic even with the tight parameters given. I haven’t been to see the AT post but I am heading there right now. You are an inspiration!
