Room in a Book: Modern Office with Lots of Storage

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

The client for this Room in a Book wanted a modern styled office with plenty of storage. I have designed almost her entire home so I have a really good idea on her style preferences and budget which makes things a lot easier. We are still looking for some artwork for above the storage unit where the printer is located. I am thinking of adding some black and white small frames arranged somewhat sporadically, similar to the inspiration office # 10 in my previous post. What do you guys think?

Overall the most challenging part was figuring out how to arrange her furniture in this small space. She already owns the rolling file cabinets and the large white bookcases and she needed to provide a space for her husband as well. I originally wanted to design a custom desk that would be a long piece of wood that would span from wall to wall, very similar to the inspiration image #5 from my previous post. The problem with this is that she didn’t want to install a custom piece in case they ended up turning it into a guest room. So I made do with two clean lined desks that would span across the window wall which helped to open up the entire room instead of having one on the window wall and another against the right empty wall. This way also gives both of them a window view. Another thing to know is that they don’t work at home so this would not be a space they would have to be in 8 hours a day.

Something to consider for your own office space is that certain pieces don’t always have to fit the space for instance instead of using basic office furniture you can use dressers or buffets. I ended up finding a buffet that works well as a place for storage but also a place to put the printer and phone because it’s at a nice height so you can operate the printer comfortably either sitting or standing. I am hoping she can pull the room together soon so I can see real photos. It’s always so fun to see your designs come to life!
