Beauty Want….Beauty Need: Can I get a Beauty Bailout???
Not really. Well, kind of….and that’s a very good thing (becoming like my mother). My mom was part of the “flower-power” generation…..big-eyed optimists that joined the ranks of public service after graduation wanting our world to be a better place. The difference between her and me? She didn’t require lipstick…….I don’t know how a total natural hippie had a vanity obsessed wanna-be “fashionista”, but HERE I AM……
And I have to say, after surfing the “wasteland that is TV” last night…I’m pretty disgusted with all of us……After watching The Real Housewives of NY on Bravo and Little Miss Perfect on WE (a look into child-pageants…and all the crazy parents of these poor kids) I just felt kind of dirty.
I’m just tired of all these “less than desirables” getting press……Here we are in what is said to be “the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression” and people are paying THOUSANDS of dollars to dress up their 9 year olds to make them look like 40 year olds (and 40 year olds from the 80’s apparently)? And then they make a TV show out of it?
And normally, I take the Housewives on Bravo with a grain of salt…I can tolerate the NY gals (at least they all have different colored hair)…But not last night…..They were all vacationing at their “Hampton Estates”, Jill (who I normally love) was throwing a charity event for “The Orphans” at which during her speech she only stated “Go buy FABRIC….” (from her husband)…Then there’s Simon and Alex…(creepy) the social opportunists, who crave money & status ’til it makes you want to VOMIT.
So, I’m watching all this crap (and am increasingly pissed off at the lack of decent tv) and I’m just thinking…THIS IS WHY WE ARE WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW. This is why everyone and their brother needs a bailout….Everyone just “wants” too much (including me at times)……The greedy wallstreet guy sells bogus “products” to investors to make a quick buck…Dick and Jane buy a house they can’t really afford and then wonder why they can’t pay their mortgage, meanwhile the bank who loaned them what they couldn’t afford in the first place wants US to bail them out? I’m just OVER it…..
Meanwhile, those of us who were “smart” and didn’t buy more than we could afford get NOTHING…And not to mention the thousands who have lost their jobs (my heart really does go out to you)….Where beauty ties into this…I do not know (exactly). But I do know this…I don’t spend more on my vanity (or mortgage) than I can afford….And shows like Housewives USED to be a fun little escape for me…But not anymore.
Let’s get real folks….You put food in front of a dog when its hungry and its mouth waters…..You put blatant, socially-irresponsible, money-grubbing automatons on TV and GLAMORIZE it and wonder why we are where we are? COME ON.
I mean, I realize that I am “part of the system”…Heck, I help make airbrushed perfection on a weekly basis…I purchase and recommend frivolous consumer spending on a DAILY basis…But everything in moderation my beauties! I mean, shoot…if a little Botox is going to make you feel better and you can afford it then GO for it…But our collective consumer excess is something that CANNOT be ignored any longer. I don’t want to “bail you out” because you think you deserve more than you can afford…(no, I”m not bitter).
SO, I will get off my soapbox my beauties….Thanks for letting me vent. How do you keep your spending in check? How do you classify your wants and needs? (hopefully not like the crap I watched on tv last night….)
Be Beautiful Ya’ll…..

Right on! Boycott has always been the best way to protest a product or condition of society. Don’t tune in to the dribble on TV that ultimately keeps women down.

Here, here. I like brainless tv and beauty supplies like the rest of us, but there’s no reason to sell our souls for it.
Great post.

Thanks girl… I know I went off a tad but with the economy the way it is, my old tv escapes into material excesses just don’t seem to work anymore….much better for me to “want what I have”…..you know?

I’m right there with you. Shows like my sweet 16 on MTV make me want to vomit. What is this showing our kids??? The parents of the kids on that show should be ashamed.

How funny…I know a makeup artist that was on Sweet 16…She was so totally demoralized by the spoiled rotten brat that she vowed she would NEVER EVER do a teenagers makeup again…….Got any good shows I need to watch?
